How Community Partners Work With Our Internship Program

In the fall of 2013, People’s Prep launched its internship program. In its first year, we had approximately 30 interns in the program; this year, we have 44 interns placed in 22 external organizations in addition to several in-school placements. Through an internship elective course, students participate in 10 hours of training prior to beginning their internships. They also receive professional development twice per month to teach them new skills, as well as reflect on their work experiences. Students in grades 10-12 are eligible to be interns.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the program work?

Interested students apply to take the internship elective, and are selected by the Community Programs Manager based on their enthusiasm, curiosity, humility, and leadership in addition to their behavior. Students intern twice each week from September to June, totaling approximately 5 hours per week or 175 hours throughout the school year–the equivalent of about a month of full-time professional experience.

How can I become a partner?

Hosting a People’s Prep intern allows your company or organization the unique opportunity to teach a young person invaluable professional skills while they give back to the Newark community. Please be in touch if you’d like to host interns or to provide resources to run our program. Contact our Community Program Coordinator Amy Pozmantier Eberly at apozmantier@peoplesprep.org or (862) 772-7524 to find out more information about how you can work with us.

Where do our interns work, and what do they do?

We currently partner with a diverse group of organizations in the Newark area—from nonprofits to government agencies to businesses to schools. Tasks performed depend on students’ interests and the partners’ needs. At their internships, students design websites, create blog posts, update social media, plan events like family game nights and anti-bullying seminars, assist customers, teach younger students, and so much more! Here is a list of some of the organizations we’ve partnered with:

NJPAC
University Hospital
Teach for America
Newark Public Library
United Way
ShopRite
Gadget Software
City of Newark: Department of Law
Medina=Citi
After School All Stars

All supervisors receive training and a guide to help them work with their interns.

Community Service

Students at People’s Prep love giving back to their community. In addition to our Annual Day of Service, we partner with local non-profit organizations to offer students ample opportunities for community service.

Past community service activities have included:

  • Community Food Bank – Students stocked boxes of canned goods at a food pantry program in the South Ward.
  • Reeves-Reed Arboretum – Students helped prepare for the annual Celebrate Fall Festival by setting up an outdoor Halloween trail and preparing games.
  • Earth Keepers in Essex County – Students beautified their own community and were able to groom and plant native plants and maintain historic trails.
